Treating inflammation with polyphenols. Part 1

Our skin and body is constantly on the receiving end of inflammatory aggressors and oxidative stress which at a  chronic level can cause long term detriment.  Intrinsic skin ageing (chronologically aged skin) is primarily due to a result of an acclumation of oxidative damage.  Younger skin is very efficient at guarding against oxidative damage, yet as we age this skin mechanism declines, which in turn triggers inflammation…..breaking down collagen and a notable decrease in the number of fibroblasts.  Extrinsic skin ageing arises from a continual assault of UV radiation, pollution, smoking and air conditioning; all of which further exacerbates skin cell damage.

Prevention is key!  Wearing a broad spectrum SPF daily will minimise DNA damage and the use of antioxidant topical skincare will have a beneficial role in fighting against free radical damage.  Antioxidants in the form of polyphenols are an ingredient catagory tha...

From the very beginning when Lime & Lilac was a distant dream I was determined to create a few quality pieces that would provide the foundation to healthy, strong skin.  The word capsule has been touted around for years and I’ve always loved the idea, especially when it comes to a capsule wardrobe -  although I’ve yet to maintain a minimal lifestyle……..its a work in progress for me!!

The idea of formulating and launching skincare quicker than a production line was never my aim; I can’t and wouldn’t want to compete with ‘The Big Boys’ in the cosmetic industry.  My line only consists of two products but these have taken many, many, many (you get the idea) months and sleepless nights of trial and error to produce; I’m a hopeless perfectionist - of which I’m very comfortable with but it can make living with me a tad challenging!  I have on several occasions woke up in the middle of the night with a ‘light bulb’ moment; enthusiastically getting straight to work!

I have my moments of...

I've been desperately wanting to write this blog for quite some time but I never really knew how to broach the subject.  I’ve suffered from depression and anxiety since my late teens……..there I said it!! The world in general is a much kinder and understanding place than 25 years ago.  The only people that knew then were my parents and best friend; I was ashamed to confide in anyone else.....crazy hey!  I have no control over these inconveniences; I simply roll with it.  Perhaps ‘simply’ isn’t the best description but I’ve learnt over the years that acceptance is key.

I was compelled to explain the above as social media on the whole seems to portray the perfect life; beautiful people (often filtered), locations, home life etc.

I don’t believe in perfection and have yet to meet anyone that doesn’t struggle from time to time; its what makes us appreciate the good times and further pushes us to pursue our dreams.

Stepping out of my comfort zone can be exhausting not only...

I was inspired to write a few words after reading a fab post yesterday on ‘Ingredients Matter’. Before my journey into the world of natural skincare I wasn’t aware of how many oils on the market were adulterated.  It soon became apparent that it was vital to find an excellent supplier with years experience under their belt and who were willing to answer all my questions.  Oh boy, I had plenty of questions 😆. I remember being perplexed at the sediment at the bottom of my Argan oil bottle; had it gone off?  The answer was no.

It’s simply the oils insoluble fraction.....tocopherols etc.  I posted an article a few months back on an experiment which  identifies a pure grade Argan oil (see below). Scent is another indicator of a good cold pressed oil; although this can vary with each crop.  There is often a distinctive aroma with each seed oil; raging from very mild (almost odourless), neutral to downright pungent!

There were several oils I had planned to use i...

Lime & Lilac - light nourishing oil

To most It may seem a little counterintuitive to use a face oil on a challenged/combination skin but I feel it's been the one ingredient that has had a positive impact on my overall complexion.  My personal journey with oils started many, many moons ago; although unfortunately it wasn't always plain sailing as many were just too rich!  There are a vast amount of seed oils to choose from; each offering their own unique qualities whether it be different textures, smells (some pungent), absorption rates etc.

Even though my skincare courses have come to an end I still find myself researching oils and their chemical composition - I'm truly hooked, especially with their ability to naturally nourish and heal the skin.  It has always been my dream to create my own skincare range, specifically using oils and now I have the tools to accomplish this dream I'm very close to launching my first light nourishing face oil.  I'm currently in preparation for...

After chatting to a friend about the effects of UVA and UVB rays on the skin, I decided to write a simple explanatory blog on the subject.  As a sun shy person I've always been an advocate of high protection sun care, big densely woven floppy hats, good quality sunglass  (protecting the eyes from UV rays) and shade!  I realise most 'normal' individuals love returning home from a relaxing summer holiday with a healthy tan; for me it's quite the opposite and always has been.  I embrace the 'pale and interesting' look -  yep each to their own ;).

As we all know UVB stimulates the melanin present in our skin - thus creating a tan but it can also cause sunburn if we're not careful; increasing the likelihood of developing skin cancers.  It also thickens the epidermis with prolonged exposure.

UVB rays penetrate the very top layers of the skin, whereas UVA rays unfortunately reach the lower levels of the dermis where the collagen fibres and blood vessels are sit...

I was recently given the opportunity to try the Babor Algae Active Ampoules.  These particular ampoules work on refreshing and plumping as well as encouraging detoxification by enzymatic activity - promoting a healthy, hydrated skin.  There is a wide selection of ampoules to cater for different skin types and needs.

Each daily dose of serum is housed in individual glass vials; which acts to preserve all the active ingredients.  There's something very satisfying about snapping the glass vial open on an evening after cleansing  (each 7x2ml ampoule box contains a little opening device which allows easy access).

I was initially surprised at the generous amount of serum within each container!  Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining!  I'd rather too much product than too little!  It soon became apparent that this active fluid serum sinks into and nourishes the skin within seconds, with no sticky aftermath.  I was easily able to spread the serum from my hair line to bus...

ALPHA-H MICRO CLEANSE SUPER SCRUB with 12% Glycolic acid and peppermint:

This reviving manual exfoliant is now an integral part of my skincare routine; with its transformative ingredients of Jojoba beads, 12% Glycolic and Caffeine it works wonders on my sometimes lacklustre skin.

Micro Cleanse has recently been tweaked to replace the Polyethylene (plastic) beads to eco-friendly Jojoba beads. Caffeine, with its antioxidant and soothing properties has also be added. As a result the above ingredients work in synergy to slough away dead unwanted dull skin cells, de-clog pores, work on pigmentation, soften the appearance of fine lines and revitalise.

That's some list for one product!

But, in my experience it really does work on these targeted problems, perhaps not overnight but over a period of time. I've noticed a significant reduction in the pigmentation on my neck; this result alone would have prompted me to repurchase. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to state that Micro Cleanse is 1 of 3...
